Troy Athens Senior Wins Prestigious Northwood University Scholarship

Dominic Devito, a senior at Athens, was awarded the Patricia and Robert Naegele Competitive Scholarship at Northwood University. Twenty finalists were chosen out of over 100 essays submitted by students on the topic of “My American Dream” and how the global free- enterprise society will help them achieve it, including examples of experiences with entrepreneurialism. The finalists were then selected to expand on their essays in front of a panel of judges with a Q & A session following their presentations. “We were so pleased to select students such as Devito, who was so clearly passionate about business and has an entrepreneurial mindset,” said Dr. Patricia Hart Timm, Northwood Academic Dean.
“I think it’s worth mentioning that Dominic was one of the four student entrepreneurs that competed in the Hawk Soup competition at Athens back in December of 2018,” said Athens marketing teacher Rob Holder. Hawk Soup was a kind of “Shark Tank” activity where students developed and pitched entrepreneurial ideas in hopes of gaining financial support for their business plans. “Dominic said that that experience combined with his experiences in the DECA and BPA clubs at Athens gave him a real sense of confidence and comfort in presenting to this panel of professors at Northwood,” concluded Holder.
Out of the 100+ essay submissions, eight winners were chosen with differing award amounts, and 12 honorable mentions. Dominic was one of 3 who received the highest award amount this year, an $8,000 annual renewable scholarship to Northwood.
