Troy Police Get Their Goats

Police nab goats on the lamb in an Oakland County suburb.

TROY, MI — Police officers are trained to deal with bad guys, handle domestic disputes, emergency situations and countless other scenarios. But not everything can be trained for, as a few Troy officers discovered Thursday evening in dealing with a pair named “Gunther and Eugene.”

At about 7:40 p.m., a 911 call came in on a pair of goats who were sauntering in and out of traffic near the Maple and Rochester road intersection. Yep, you read correctly, goats. Turns out the goats, Gunther and Eugene, came from a nearby Maple Road residence, Troy Sgt. Meghan Lehman said.

“They found a hole in the fence and got out,” she added.

The Maple Road resident was goat-sitting for a friend, Lehman said. Along with his help, a trio of Troy officers were able to “apprehend” the goats without incident.

No injuries were reported and Lehman said no law enforcement actions would be taken as a result of the incident. She noted that in Troy, homeowners with more than three-fourths of an acre of land are allowed to have animals like goats and sheep on their property.

Officers escorted the goats back to the Maple Road home. They also advised the resident of how to repair the fence to avoid another incident.

It wasn’t the only critter-related situation in Troy on Thursday.

An angry squirrel chased staff and students at Morse Elementary, Lehman said. When an officer showed up to help, he was also chased.

Thankfully, the officer was able to overcome the squirrel and usher him into a trash can with a broom. No injuries were reported.
