Troy Police Thwart $20K Heist From Saks Fifth Avenue

A pair of suspects from Mexico hit a Troy Police officer with a SUV before surrendering.

TROY, MI — A pair of suspects from Mexico were arrested by Troy Police after allegedly attempting to steal $19,990 worth of items from Saks Fifth Avenue at Somerset Mall on Nov. 5. Police said one of the suspects used a pair of wire cutters to remove a cable that secured merchandise to a display rack at about 1 p.m.

Reports said the suspects then concealed the items and began walking toward an exit door. Saks employees approached them and reports said they dropped the merchandise and then ran out of the store.

Troy Police arrived moments later and ordered the suspects out of a Chevrolet SUV. The driver, who police said is a 47-year-old man from Guadalajara, Mexico, attempted to drive away and struck the officer’s leg.

Reports said the man then stopped the vehicle, got out and was arrested. A 25-year-old woman from Caroliona, Mexico would not obey officers’ commands, according to reports, and was removed from the vehicle and arrested.

The Guadalajara man was charged with Organized Retail Fraud, Organized Retail Fraud – Remove Anti-Theft Device, Malicious Destruction of Property, Possession of Burglary Tools, and Hinder and Obstruction of a Police Officer. The Caroliona woman was charged with Organized Retail Fraud, Organized Retail Fraud – Remove Anti-Theft Device, and Possession of Burglary Tools.
