I-35W South To Close In Burnsville

The closure is a part of the project to replace the I-35W Minnesota River Bridge between Burnsville and Bloomington.

BURNSVILLE, MN — Drivers who use southbound Interstate 35W between Bloomington and Burnsville should be prepared for a full closure of the road starting Friday, Sept. 11.

Beginning at 10 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11 southbound I-35W will close between I-494 in Bloomington and Highway 13 in Burnsville. The following ramps will also close at 9 p.m.:

  • Westbound I-494 to southbound I-35W
  • Eastbound I-494 to southbound I-35W
  • I-35W ramps to/from 82nd Street
  • I-35W ramps to/from 90th Street
  • Southbound I-35W ramps to/from 94th Street
  • Southbound I-35W ramps to/from 98th Street
  • Southbound I-35W to 106th Street
  • Southbound I-35W ramps to/from Black Dog Road
  • Southbound I-35W ramps to/from Cliff Road

Motorists should follow the signed detour using I-494 and I-35E or find alternate routes to bypass the closure.

The ramp from Penn Avenue to eastbound I-494 will also be closed for the weekend to allow crews the necessary space to close the eastbound I-494 to southbound I-35W ramp. Motorists will use American Boulevard West and Lyndale Avenue to access eastbound I-494.

All southbound I-35W lanes and ramps are expected to reopen by 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 14, according to a news release.

Northbound I-35W and all associated entrance and exit ramps within the area will remain open with a couple exceptions:

  • The ramp from Black Dog Road to northbound I-35W is closed through fall 2020.
  • Beginning at 7 a.m. Thu, Sept. 10 through the middle of October, the ramp from 106th Street to northbound I-35W will be closed to allow the City of Bloomington to complete utility work and to reconstruct the ramp and frontage road. The detour will be Lyndale Avenue and West 98th Street to northbound I-35W.

These road and ramp closure are part of a multiyear project to replace the I-35W Minnesota River Bridge between Burnsville and Bloomington. The work will include reconstructing the I-35W Bridge spanning the Minnesota River and 106th Street, replacing pavement from Cliff Road to 106th Street and constructing a trail between Black Dog Road and Lyndale Avenue.
