Shakopee High School 11th Grader Killed In Gravel Road Crash

The crash took the life of one Minnesota teenager and injured at least three others.

SCOTT COUNTY, MN — A 16-year-old is dead and a high school community is shaken following a tragic car crash on a gravel road in the south Twin Cities metro Thursday afternoon. On Sept. 14 at about 3:11 p.m., the Scott County Sheriff’s Office responded to a single car motor vehicle crash near the 13800 block of Zumbro Avenue in Jackson Township.

Of the five occupants, JaMason Moffett, 16, was deceased at the scene. Moffett was an 11th grader at Shakopee High School.

Two other occupants were critically injured, and two others sustained lesser injuries. According to authorities, the vehicle was traveling southbound along Zumbro Avenue when it left the road way, hit a field approach driveway and began to overturn.

The Scott County Sheriff’s Office said it has not been determined if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash.

The driver in the crash has been released from St. Francis Regional Medical Center. The driver’s identity is being withheld due to data privacy concerns and the ongoing investigation.

The three other survivors of the crash have been identified:

• Sheikhnur Siad Jimale, age 17, of Shakopee is in critical condition at Hennepin County Medical Center.
• Hannah Ludmilia Chance, age 17, of Shakopee is in stable condition at Hennepin County Medical Center.
• Khalil Malik Watson, 20, of Burnsville was released from St. Francis Regional Medical Center.

"Heavy hearts this morning for the entire Shakopee community and Shakopee High School," Shakopee Public Schools said in a statement Friday. "Our thoughts and condolences go out to Ja’Mason's family and friends. Our thoughts are also with the other individuals involved in the accident as well as their families."

Counselors are at the high school Friday to talk with students and staff who may need support.

“It’s always a tragedy when someone is injured or killed in an accident,” said Scott County Sheriff Luke Hennen in a statement.

“But the pain is particularly acute when we lose one of our young people, taking with them the loss of their future and their potential, and leaving only grief for those left behind. We can only pray for the swift and complete recovery of those who are currently hospitalized, and for some semblance of eventual peace and consolation for the family and friends of the person who lost their life today.”

The Scott County Sheriff’s Office Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office and the Minnesota State Patrol are investigating the crash, according to a news release.
