13 year old, Lainey Oliphant of Maple Grove, was recently accepted into North Hennepin Community College and spent her summer in college! She took a writing class, attending class in the morning and ending up finishing with an "A". She completed several steps to gain entry, including obtaining a letter of recommendation from one of her Maple Grove Middle School teachers, an approval letter from her school counselor, completed a consultation with Osseo Sr. High’s PSCO Adviser and of course passed the English portion of the entrance exam at NHCC. She enrolled, attended orientation, met with Admissions and completed her class, securing four college credits, to go towards her Associate’s Degree. She thoroughly enjoyed her experience and the friends she made there. She plans on attending again, summer 2019, taking two more four credit classes before starting 9th grade at Osseo Sr. High.
Because of her accomplishments she was invited to apply for Harvard University’s Secondary Summer Program in 2020. If accepted, she’d spend seven weeks there, taking an eight credit course and experiencing campus life first-hand.
