More Charges Filed In Maple Grove Triple Killing

A woman died July 9, and two others died later this month.

MAPLE GROVE, MN — A Plymouth man faces additional charges after two more people died weeks after an early July assault in a Maple Grove home. David Ekers, 34, now faces three second-degree murder charges.

On July 8, Maple Grove police responded to a call from Ekers' father who said his son attacked his family. At the home, officers found Ekers’ grandmother, mother and sister with serious head injuries. All three were hospitalized.

Ekers’ father told police he heard his wife scream something like "David, no." The father ran upstairs and saw Ekers holding a wrench in his hand that he then dropped, the criminal complaint states.

Ekers admitted he was trying to kill his grandmother, mother and sister with the wrench, according to the authorities. He did not attack his father because he viewed him as "an ally," the complaint states.

Ekers suffers from mental illness, according to police. Ekers believed his mom, grandmother, and sister would make him return to the hospital or start taking his medication again, investigators said.
