Brooklyn Center Man Killed Ex-Wife Who Recently Remarried: Police

In a recording saved to a flash drive, the man said he couldn't let "that hillbilly" have his ex-wife, according to police.

BROOKLYN CENTER, MN — A Brooklyn Center man was charged Tuesday with second-degree murder in the shooting death of his ex-wife.

In a recording saved to a flash drive, Robert McCloud, 64, said he killed his ex-wife — who recently remarried — because he couldn't let "that hillbilly" have her, according to police.

McCloud is in custody and is scheduled to make his first court appearance Wednesday afternoon. His bail was set at $2,000,000.

If convicted, McCloud faces up to 40 years in prison.

On Friday, police responded to McCloud’s ex-wife’s Robbinsdale home on a report that he killed her. Officers found the woman dead in the master bedroom and a discharged cartridge casing nearby, according to the criminal complaint.

Police then responded to McCloud’s home in Brooklyn Center, where McCloud told officers that "they caught themselves a murderer and saved a suicide," and that the "plan was to take care of business with [Victim], then myself, but I took care of business with her and I left," according to the criminal complaint. He was arrested Friday night.

Investigators said they also learned that McCloud mailed flash drives to family members before shooting his ex-wife.

One of the drives contained video footage of McCloud saying that he planned to commit suicide and that he knew it was wrong to involve his ex-wife, but he wasn’t going to let her new husband have his wife, according to the criminal complaint.
