Winter Storm Warning Issued for Maple Grove, Twin Cities Area

While a coating of snow is expected to fall Friday afternoon, the heavy stuff should usher in winter Saturday night, with steady snow through Sunday morning, the National Weather Service forecast states.

UPDATE (5:30 p.m., Friday, Dec. 7): The National Weather Service in Chanhassen has uprgraded the weekend forecast to a Winter Storm Warning, in effect for most metro counties through Sunday afternoon. 

Snow should begin falling Saturday and into Sunday, but it's the 40 mph winds that has forecasters calling for "blizzard conditions" on Sunday afternoon.

The National Weather Service in Chanhassen has issued a hazardous weather out in effect from Saturday evening to Sunday afternoon for the Twin Cities area, including Hennepin County.

Weather service forecasters believe as many as six inches of snow could fall on Saturday and Sunday. Windy conditions may lead to blowing and drifting snow and "near-blizzard" conditions in open areas, forecasters say.

Forecasters are also calling for one to three inches of snow accumulation on Friday afternoon and evening.

The snow expected this weekend will be followed by cold air system, according to the weather service. Wind chils of 15 to 20 degrees below zero are likely across much of central and western Minnesota Sunday night and Monday.
