The pro-Trump mob fought with police and forcibly made its way into both chambers of Congress and the offices of senators and representatives. The rioters successfully delayed the ongoing count of the Electoral College; the joint session of Congress eventually resumed its work later that evening and completed the certification early the following morning.
Five people died — including an on-duty Capitol Police officer — and more than 80 arrests were made in connection with the riot.
