Best Wishes and God Bless You, Harry and Meghan

For Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, here's some unsolicited marital advice about unreasonable expectations and an Apache prayer for you.

Just think, barely a generation ago, actress/activist Rachel Meghan Markle wouldn’t have been “good enough” to marry the son of the future King of England. This beautiful, brilliant humanitarian never could have married “the one” so right for her. Why? Sooooo many reasons. Being born and raised a Catholic AND divorced AND bi-racial AND (gasp!) American would have immediately disqualified her from marrying Prince Harry.

My, how times have changed — and certainly for the better, thanks to 21st Century values and The Diana Effect.

Now Great Britain’s Royal Family has realized what most people have know all along: that a person’s life should not be judged by her ancestry or lineage or skeletons in her family closet, but by the life she has proudly created for herself and others. Prince Harry is really the lucky one here — but he’s smart enough to already know that. Good for him.

I’m not a big expert on married life, but I did celebrate a 22nd anniversary with my trusty BFF this month. So I do understand a little about life with a soul mate. With all due respect, I offer this insight for the happy couple: DON’T EVER THINK THAT YOUR WEDDING DAY WILL BE THE HAPPIEST DAY OF YOUR LIVES.

In fact, I would advise Harry and Meghan to make bloody sure their wedding day on Saturday, May 19, 2018, will NOT be the happiest day of their lives. It can’t be. Otherwise, what would the rest of their married life together look like?

Sure, you want May 19th to be a great day, but NOT “the greatest.” Let it be but one of the many great days you will share together, and not the only greatEST one.

Also, since Meghan is an American, here’s something indigenous to the USA: a Native American prayer with much wisdom from the Apache people.

Now you will feel no rain,
for each of you will be shelter to the other.
Now you will feel no cold,
for each of you will be warmth to the other.
Now there is no loneliness for you.
Now you are two persons,
but there is only one life before you.

Go now to your dwelling place,
to enter into the days of your togetherness;
and may your days be good,
and long together.
