Richfield Alumni Come Together to Form 'Giving Fund'

A special kick-off event from the RHS Alumni Giving Fund is Saturday in Richfield. And you're invited.

While members of the Richfield High School Class of 1992 gathered at their 20 year reunion last year, many were brought to tears as they saw their classmates reach deep into their pockets to donate money to a good cause.

The good cause? A classmate's daughter who had just been diagnosed with cancer.

The class raised $2,000 during the reunion, and since then the class has continued their mission to help one another out, according to Kari (Johnson) Mitchell, 1992 senior class president.

"From that night, we've supported classmates spouses being diagnosed with breast cancer, a classmates daughter injured with medical bills racking up in the tens of thousands and, tragically, a classmates spouse passed away after a long cancer battle," Mitchell wrote in an email release. "The needs are many, but the money is not."

Now a group of alumni (that goes beyond the Class of 1992) has come together to create the RHS Alumni Giving Fund, in hopes of being able to make a larger impact on all Richfield grads.

A special kick-off event to raise money for the fund is being held from 3-5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26 at the Richfield American Legion Post 435, 6501 Portland Ave.

The goal of the event is to raise $10,000 to officially establish the nonprofit foundation. Tickets are $30 per person, with an additional adult guest ticket being $20 and $5 for each child. Light appetizers, a drink ticket, entertainment and a presentation is included with the price of the ticket.

As part of the Saturday fundraiser, there will also be an opportunity to provide gifts almost immediately to some classmates.  Attendees will be allowed to designate their gifts to a particular classmate if they desire, give to the general fund, or both.

For more information on the event, contact Mitchell at mrskarimitchell@gmail.com or 612-272-7702. Visit the fund website at rhsalumnigivingfund.org. Tickets can be purchased through the website.
