Watch: Richfield Crews Begin Flooding Skating Rinks

City officials say they're hoping all Richfield area rinks will be ready for skating by the end of next week.

Crews in Richfield have started flooding skating rinks to prepare for the 2016-2017 winter season. Officials say they're hoping all rinks will be ready for skating by the end of next week.

In previous years, the following Richfield parks have featured outdoor skating rinks: Christian, Augsburg, Fremont, Jefferson, Madison, Roosevelt, and Taft.

Richfield encourages residents to call the weather and cancellation hotline at (612) 861-9189, ext. #2 for up-to-date rink and program cancellations. Sites may be closed and programs cancelled if any of the following weather and ice conditions occur:

  • The air temperature is 10 below zero or colder, per the National Weather Service
  • The wind chill index is 20 below zero or colder, per the National Weather Service
  • Warm temperatures softening ice, making them unsafe for skating
  • If there is a snowfall of more than 2 inches, this could delay cleaning the rinks and opening the warming house.

City officials recorded a short video as crews began working on the rinks for the winter season.
