Arrests In Minneapolis Decrease, Community Rebuilds

The nighttime in Minneapolis and St. Paul has grown quieter as police, residents, and community leaders look to restore peace in the area.

MINNEAPOLIS — Arrests in Minneapolis and St. Paul appear to be on the decline as authorities work to stabilize the area. Police arrested 66 people "without incident" on the Minnesota State Capitol grounds for curfew violations Monday night.

There was a peaceful and lawful protest there, but some demonstrators stayed after the 10 p.m. curfew, according to the Minnesota Department of Safety.

Three people were arrested for curfew violations at Lake Street and Bloomington Avenue in Minneapolis.

The 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. curfew will also be in effect Tuesday night.

"Having a curfew in place has allowed law enforcement to separate out those who mean to bring further pain and destruction in our communities from the thousands who have peacefully demonstrated for systemic changes in George Floyd’s name,” Gov. Tim Walz said Monday while announcing the modified curfew.

"I want to thank our public servants who’ve worked tirelessly to restore peace to our neighborhoods, and all Minnesotans who have abided by the curfew to keep our communities safe."

"This past week has been one of the most painful in our state’s history," said Lt. Governor Peggy Flanagan.

"It hurts to stay inside when we know our voices are critical to bringing the systemic change we need, but we will continue this fight tomorrow, and every day after. Please stay home to stay safe and help our communities heal."

State leaders, police chiefs, and mayors will assess the situation before deciding if the curfew will be extended.

The number of active Minnesota National Guard soldiers in the Twin Cities has dropped this week, but Minnesota Department of Corrections Commissioner Paul Schnell says there are "adequate resources." Officials will evaluate the guard's presence in the metro on a daily basis.

"The goal is for normal policing operations to resume," Schnell said.
