I-35W To Shut Down In Both Directions This Weekend
Don't plan on using Interstate 35W in Minneapolis this weekend. The closure is a part of the $239 million project that is almost finished.
MINNEAPOLIS — Interstate 35W will be closed in both directions in Minneapolis this weekend as construction crews work to complete the "Downtown to Crosstown" project.
From 10 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Monday, I-35W will be closed in both directions between Highway 62 and Interstate 94.
Motorists will have to detour from Highway 62 to Highway 100 to Interstate 394.

Downtown to Crosstown construction project.
The $239 million project on the 2.5 mile stretch of I-35W between 43rd Street and 15th Street began in 2017. It's scheduled to wrap up this fall.

The project includes the following improvements:
Install new concrete on more than 50-year-old freeway, rebuilds 11 bridges and repairs four more
New ramp access from I-35W south to Lake St. and from I-35W north to 28th St.
Build MnPASS lanes near downtown and bus station at Lake St. for better transit service
New pedestrian bridges will be wider and more accessible
Reduce congestion and increase traffic mobility including rebuilt ramp from I-35W north to I-94 west
