Butter Bakery Cafe Burglarized

The incident Sunday was the restaurant's first in five years.

During a Sunday rush, one man distracted counterworkers at Butter Bakery Cafe on Grand Avenue while another went into the basement, broke into the office and stole two days of proceeds.

"It was scary because it was while customers were here during the day," owner Dan Swenson-Klatt said. "I like to think of us as a generous, welcome, very open kind of place. Events like that kind of knock you off course a little, but it doesn't change who we are."

The Minneapolis Police Department's crime lab checked for evidence at the scene, and police have a good description of the robbery, but it could take up to a week before the case is assigned to an investigator.

Although this is the first such incident in five years in the often-crowded cafe, Swenson-Klatt is considering installing a security camera.

"As a staff, it's just a reminder for all of us that there are good ways to be preventative and some good things to do to be alert," he said.

On Monday evening, Butter posted a message on their Facebook page that proves the cafe's values haven't changed.

"We do appreciate the care and concern we are receiving from yesterday's robbery," the posting read. "I'm feeling fortunate that it was not a tornado we had to clean up after yesterday. Please remember our neighbors on the Northside."
