Car Explodes In Deadly I-94 Crash In Minneapolis

Two people were killed and a third suffered life-threatening injuries when a car's fuel tank ruptured in the Lowry Hill Tunnel.

MINNEAPOLIS — Two people are dead and a third has life-threatening injuries after a car's fuel tank ruptured in the Lowry Hill Tunnel on Interstate 94 in Minneapolis Monday night.

At 9:39 p.m., a BMW "attempted" to enter the Lowry Hill Tunnel westbound "at a high rate of speed," according to the Minnesota State Patrol. The BMW crashed into a freeway barrier wall, causing an explosion as the car slide into the tunnel.

A Minnesota Department of Safety traffic camera captured the collision on video.

No other cars were involved in the crash. Road conditions were dry, police said.
