CHAMPLIN, MN — The outer Minneapolis suburb of Champlin is adding security after former Brooklyn Center police officer Kim Potter was charged in the fatal shooting death of Daunte Wright.

Champlin, where Potter lives, is located 15 minutes north of Brooklyn Center. None of the city's 49 police officers live in Brooklyn Center, according to Mayor Mike Elliot.

Fencing and concrete barricades were built around Potter's home Tuesday, and most traffic is being diverted from her street, which is under constant surveillance and features a "Caution: Lasers In Use" sign.

On Thursday, Champlin joined other cities this week in enforcing a nighttime curfew.

Champlin and Brooklyn Center, where Potter was an officer for 26 years until she resigned Tuesday, do not border each other and differ significantly in the race and socioeconomic status of residents.

People of color make up less than 15 percent of Champlin's population, and the median household income there is nearly $93,000.

There have been no reports of protests in the city. However, protests outside the home of public officials and police officers have become more common recently in the Twin Cities metro. In August, protesters targeted then-Minneapolis police union president Bob Kroll at his home in Hugo.

Protesters have also targeted the home of Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman and former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chavin. Chauvin faces murder charges in the Memorial Day 2020 death of George Floyd.

The Champlin Police Department did not immediately return Patch's request for comment.
