Deadline Approaching To Homeschool In Minnesota This Fall

Here's what you need to know if you're a Minnesota parent or guardian considering homeschool for your child.

TWIN CITIES, MN — The coronavirus pandemic has made life for parents much harder, especially when it comes to education. The concerns about the effectiveness of online or distance learning — or the safety of in-person classrooms — has many parents considering homeschool for the first time.

If you're considering homeschooling your child in Minnesota, here are some things you should know:

In Minnesota, parents do not have to report to the state or any other agency when they are homeschooling a child under age 7. However, Minnesota’s "compulsory instruction" law requires all children ages 7 through 17 to attend a registered public or private school. Homeschools are considered to be a type of private school in Minnesota, and they must be registered.

School attendance is mandatory for homeschool students, just as it is for students of traditional public or private schools.

Parents who want to homeschool must notify the student’s resident school district superintendent by Oct. 1 ever year once the child reaches age 7.
