Drinking And Decorative Fountains Will Stay Off In Minneapolis

Bottle-filler water stations will open, but the "bubbler" style drinking fountains will remain closed this summer.

MINNEAPOLIS — Public drinking fountains, or "bubblers," will remain off in Minneapolis this spring and summer even as the Parks and Recreation Department starts up other seasonal plumbing. Decorative water fountains will also remain off this year, the department announced Friday.

Keeping the fountains off is a part of protocols related to the coronavirus pandemic.

Most bottle-filler water stations, bathrooms, irrigation systems, and public park buildings and facilities will open.

The department expects to make an announcement about pool openings at a later time.

"The process includes more than 600 water controls at more than 100 sites throughout the city, so it can take up to eight weeks to have water flowing everywhere," the department said. "All of the facilities below should be operating by Memorial Day weekend."
