George Floyd: Minneapolis Mayor Calls On Cop To Be Charged

"Why is the man who killed George Floyd not in jail?" Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey asked Wednesday.

MINNEAPOLIS — Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey on Wednesday called for the arresting officer in the George Floyd case to be charged.

"Why is the man who killed George Floyd not in jail?" Frey asked at a news conference.

Frey said he has asked the Hennepin County Attorney's Office to make the charge. The mayor did not want to specify what the officer should be charged with, noting that more evidence will come up.

According to the Star Tribune, Derek Chauvin was the officer who used his knee to pin Floyd down.

In a now-viral video, Floyd is heard telling officers "I can't breathe," and asking for water.

Bystanders were heard telling Chauvin to get off of him.

"Unresponsive" and "pulseless"

Floyd did not have a pulse when he was put into the ambulance at the scene of his arrest Monday, states a report from the Minneapolis Fire Department.

According to a document uploaded by KARE 11 reporter Lou Raguse, Floyd was "unresponsive" and "pulseless" when Minneapolis medics arrived and put him into the ambulance. Medics at the scene were told by bystanders that police "had killed the man."

According to the original statement released by the Minneapolis police on the incident, Floyd died at the Hennepin County Medical Center after he was taken there by ambulance.
