Full Autopsy For George Floyd Released

MINNEAPOLIS — George Floyd tested positive for COVID-19 on April 3, according to the full autopsy report released by Hennepin County Medical Examiner Wednesday night. Floyd was likely asymptomatic, and the virus did not play a role in his death, the report finds.

"Since PCR positivity for 2019-nCoV RNA can persist for weeks after the onset and resolution of clinical disease, the autopsy result most likely reflects asymptomatic but persistent PCR positivity from previous infection," the examiner stated.

Floyd suffered a cardiac arrest when he was restrained by Officer Derek Chauvin during his Memorial Day arrest, according to the examiner. The manner of death is listed as homicide.

Floyd "experienced a cardiopulmonary arrest while being restrained" by police, the examiner states. Other significant conditions Floyd suffered include arteriosclerotic and hypertensive heart disease, fentanyl intoxication, and recent methamphetamine use.

The examiner's ruling was delayed until Monday because it needed "further testing and investigation by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office, Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and the FBI."

Earlier Monday, an independent autopsy conducted by doctors hired by the legal team representing Floyd's family found he died from asphyxia due to sustained forceful pressure.
