Minneapolis Animal Control Releases Top Cat, Dog Names

Minneapolis Animal Care and Control are celebrating a record-breaking year for pet adoptions. Here are the top pet names.

MINNEAPOLIS — The most popular name for pets licensed in Minneapolis in 2019 is "Lucy" for dogs and "Luna" for cats, according to end-of-the-year data from Minneapolis Animal Care and Control. The division also shattered its record of adoptions for a calendar year.

More than 13,000 pets were licensed or had licenses renewed by Animal Care & Control in 2019, including nearly 11,000 dogs and about 2,200 cats.

Animal Care and Control had 735 adoptions in 2019. That’s a 60 percent increase over 2018, which was the previous record year. Those adoptions include 30 animals that found forever homes during the Nov. 22 "Clear the Shelter" event, when all adoption fees were waived. It also includes 25 felines adopted in mid-August when cat adoption fees were waived in celebration of International Cat Day.

Animal Care & Control has a continually changing community of animals available for adoption every day at affordable prices. Adoptable animals are completely vaccinated, sterilized, micro-chipped and ready to go to your home, according to a news release.

735 pets adopted in 2019

  • 353 cats.
  • 306 dogs.
  • 55 birds.
  • 21 other animals.

Minneapolis Animal Care & Control accepts every animal regardless of health, age, breed or behavior. Staff are committed to providing humane care and always strive to do what is right for each animal in our care. When animals cannot be adopted by the general public, staff calls on the help of partner rescue groups and sanctuaries to help.

1,048 animals transferred to rescue groups in 2019

  • 576 cats.
  • 208 dogs.
  • 97 birds.
  • 167 other animals.

Vaccination clinics in 2019

Animal Care & Control also held four low-cost vaccination clinics throughout Minneapolis. These events made it even more convenient and affordable for owners to protect their pets. Through these events, Animal Care and Control was able to provide:

  • 472 rabies vaccinations.
  • 285 DA2PP vaccinations, protecting dogs from canine distemper, canine adenovirus, canine parvovirus and parainfluenza.
  • 163 PRC vaccinations, protecting cats from feline panleukopenia, feline viral rhinotracheitis and feline calicivirus.
  • 201 implants of identification chips.
