Minneapolis Aquatennial Canceled: George Floyd, COVID-19 Cited

"Simply said, it does not feel like it is time to celebrate," the Minneapolis Downtown Council said in its announcement Thursday.

MINNEAPOLIS, MN — The Minneapolis Aquatennial is the latest annual summer event to be canceled in Minnesota. The Minneapolis Downtown Council cited the "realities of COVID-19 and its impacts on public health " and the death of George Floyd in its announcement Thursday.

"We will always prioritize community safety over celebrations," the council stated.

"More importantly, Minneapolis is still reeling from the death of George Floyd. Our community has been deeply impacted by his tragic death and the unrest that followed. Simply said, it does not feel like it is time to celebrate."

The Minneapolis Aquatennial is the city's official civic celebration. In particular, it honors the city's lakes and rivers.

"As our community begins to heal, we are encouraged by neighbors helping neighbors and the hope and spirit of Minneapolis at work," organizers added.
