MINNEAPOLIS — The city of Minneapolis installed new parklets for the summer near George Floyd Square, located at 38th Street and Chicago. Parklets are spaces that act as an extension of the sidewalk into the street.

"Parklets are unique public gathering spaces built into the right-of way with seating, plantings and other amenities," the city said Thursday.

Businesses, neighborhood groups, and nonprofits can host the parklets.

City officials hope the parklets will act as "community corridors" that "make neighborhoods more vibrant and support local businesses."

"They add color and vibrancy to the streetscape, promote a sense of place and encourage traffic to slow down," the city said.
