TWIN CITIES, MN — Up to 3 inches of snow could fall in the Twin Cities metro Thursday before the "extreme cold" sets in, according to the National Weather Service. Strong winds will likely create blizzard conditions in parts of the state.

The low on Sunday in the metro will be 14 degrees below zero.

After the snow, the deep cold will set in. "Temperatures are expected to fall around 30 degrees below normal Saturday through Monday," says the NWS. "Steady wind speeds of 10 to 20 mph will also result in an extended periods of hazardous wind chills."

Wednesday: Patchy freezing fog between 10am and 11am. Increasing clouds, with a high near 32. South southeast wind 5 to 15 mph.
Wednesday Night: A chance of rain or freezing rain before 2am, then snow likely, possibly mixed with rain. Cloudy, with a low around 29. South southeast wind 5 to 15 mph becoming southwest after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 70%. Little or no ice accumulation expected. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.
Thursday: Snow, mainly before 2pm. Patchy blowing snow after noon. Temperature falling to around 17 by 5pm. Blustery, with a northwest wind 10 to 15 mph increasing to 15 to 20 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 35 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New snow accumulation of 2 to 4 inches possible.
Thursday Night: A 20 percent chance of snow before 7pm. Patchy blowing snow before 11pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 5. Wind chill values as low as -11. Blustery, with a northwest wind 15 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 35 mph.
Friday: Partly sunny, with a high near 12. West northwest wind around 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph.
Friday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around -3. West northwest wind 10 to 15 mph.
Saturday: Mostly cloudy and cold, with a high near 1. Northwest wind 10 to 15 mph.
