Ramsey, Hennepin Deputies Fired Weapons In Fatal Uptown Shooting

A Hennepin County sheriff's deputy and a Ramsey County sheriff's deputy fired their weapons in Thursday's fatal shooting in Minneapolis.

MINNEAPOLIS — A Hennepin County sheriff’s deputy and a Ramsey County sheriff’s deputy fired their weapons in the Uptown neighborhood of Minneapolis Thursday, killing one man, according to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.

The man was shot and killed on the top level of a parking ramp at 1405 West Lake Street just after 2 p.m. His identity has not yet been released.

The two deputies who fired their weapons were on the United States Marshals "North Star" Fugitive Task Force that was alerted about the location of a man who had a warrant for a felony firearms violation, the bureau said.

At one point, the man fired his weapon from inside a car before he was killed, according to the bureau. A woman who was in the car at the time was treated for minor injuries from glass debris.

There were no other injuries reported.

The U.S Marshal Service does allow task force members to have body cameras, and there is no squad camera footage of the incident, according to the bureau. The Minneapolis police were not involved in the shooting, department spokesperson John Elder told Patch.

The BCA, a state agency that typically investigates shootings involving law enforcement, is leading the investigation in the shooting.

"The BCA is in the very early stages of its investigation," the agency said Friday. "The BCA will provide additional information as the investigation progresses."

Fatal shooting sparks unrest

A crowd of onlookers and protesters quickly grew near the scene of the shooting Thursday afternoon. Overnight, "numerous" buildings were vandalized and looted in response to the fatal shooting, according to Minneapolis police.

Protesters set a dumpster on fire, KSTP reported.

Windows at the Lake Street CVS were smashed in and the inside of the store was vandalized, according to the Star Tribune. The nearby Lake Street Tires Plus was also vandalized the newspaper reported.

The fatal shooting happened hours after city workers began clearing the barriers at George Floyd Square Thursday morning.
