WASHINGTON, D.C. — Rep. Ilhan Omar Thursday introduced articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump. The move comes after a pro-Trump mob breached the U.S. Capitol and forced their way into both chambers of Congress Wednesday.

The riots temporarily delayed the counting of the Electoral College votes, which confirms Joe Biden's win over Trump.

U.S. Capitol Police evacuated both the Library of Congress and the Cannon House Office Building as rioters flooded the building to intimidate lawmakers and vandalize property.

"Donald J. Trump should be impeached by the House of Representatives & removed from office by the United States Senate," Omar tweeted as the chaos unfolded Wednesday. "We can't allow him to remain in office, it's a matter of preserving our Republic and we need to fulfill our oath."

"Every single hour that Donald Trump remains in office, our country, our democracy, and our national security remain in danger," the impeachment articles state. "Congress must take immediate action to keep the people of this country safe and set a precedent that such behavior cannot be tolerated."

Initial co-sponsors of the resolution include representatives David Cicilline, Ted Lieu, Al Green, Hank Johnson, Ayanna Pressley, Rashida Talib, Vicente Gonzalez, Jamal Bowman, Mondaire Jones, Verinca Escobar, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Cori Bush.

In August, Trump became the third president to be impeached by the U.S. House. However, he was acquitted by the Senate.

As Omar pushes Trump's impeachment, other members of Congress call for invoking the 25th amendment to remove the president from office.
