Should Juneteenth Become A City Holiday? Minneapolis Wants Input
Juneteenth came a whole two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation.
MINNEAPOLIS — The Minneapolis City Council is asking for public input on a proposal to make Juneteenth a new official city holiday. Juneteenth is celebrated June 19 and commemorates the day in 1865 when the last enslaved persons in the United States learned they had been finally granted entitlement to natural-born human rights under the law.
Juneteenth came a whole two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation.
People can submit their comments online or provide them directly to members of the commission at a public hearing at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 12.

Juneteenth would be the first holiday to be added to the Minneapolis city calendar since Martin Luther King Jr. Day was made a city holiday in 1986.
