What's Open, Closed New Year's Day 2020 In Twin Cities, Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS-ST. PAUL METRO, MN — Minneapolis and St. Paul city government offices are closed Wednesday, Jan. 1, in observance of the New Year’s Day holiday. City offices will resume regular business hours Thursday, Jan. 2.

First responders and employees at some businesses will be working on Christmas and New Year's, but most Twin Cities metro area business will be closed to give workers a chance to gather to share the holiday with loved ones.

Garbage and recycling - There’s no city of Minneapolis garbage and recycling pickup Wednesday, Jan 1. Households’ garbage and recycling pickups scheduled for Jan. 1 through Jan. 4 will occur one day later (Jan. 2 through Jan. 5) than their normal schedules.

In addition, the Solid Waste and Recycling customer service office and the Minneapolis Public Works South Transfer Station are closed Wednesday, Jan. 1, according to a news release.

Metered parking - The Minneapolis parking meters are not enforced Jan. 1. All other parking restrictions in the city remain in effect and subject to enforcement, including Park Board meters along Minneapolis parkways, University of Minnesota parking meters and those of private organizations that operate their own meters. Always read the information posted on the meter to be certain.

Permits, development services - The Minneapolis Development Review Customer Service Center (the permit office) is closed Wednesday, Jan. 1.

311 - Minneapolis 311 will take calls 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 1.

911 and emergency services - The holiday does not affect 911 or Minneapolis police and fire emergency services.

Liquor stores - Liquor stores can legally be open on New Year's Day in Minnesota, but many will remain closed for the holiday. Be sure to call ahead before venturing out.

Libraries - All county and city libraries will be closed.

Schools - Schools will be closed. Minneapolis Public Schools are on winter break.
