MERRIMACK, NH — Merrimack High School's Top 10: Catherine Selby
I am so pleased to be a part of the Class of 2021’s Top Ten. My involvement in the Merrimack community began twelve years ago when I became a Girl Scout. This afforded me the opportunity not only to grow as a leader but to give back to the community in our many volunteer activities and by earning my Bronze and Silver awards. My work ethic and push for always doing my best were fostered during my eight years on YMCA Storm Swim Team. At Merrimack High School, I am a member of the National Honors Society and Math Honors Society where I gave back by tutoring, raking leaves for members of the community, and reading stories to elementary school children. The environment is a major focus in my life and the Gardening Club allowed me to beautify MHS where we have a pumpkin patch, sunflowers, and a butterfly garden in the courtyard. In the Environmental Club, I went to the Soils Competition at UNH for two years, (and learned more about dirt than I ever thought I could). I have been a Representative and a Secretary for the Class of 2021 Student Council and a participant in the Interact Club. In addition to these extracurriculars, I ran on the Cross Country and Track & Field teams for four years and was a Captain my senior year. In the winters, I swam on the Swim Team and was a Captain this year. My teammates are an extension of my family, and I never could have gotten through high school without them. I am incredibly lucky to have been a part of the community that helped me explore all my interests and fostered my talents. My friends, peers, teachers, and mom have led me to this point and I cannot wait to use what I learned to help make a difference in the world. Next year, I will be attending the University of New Hampshire as an Honors student and Hamel Scholar, double majoring in environmental engineering and sustainability.
