“Starry Sunrise,” an entry in the 41st annual Jack Parfitt open juried photography exhibition by Bryan Johnson, held in 2020.

The theme this year is “Transitions.” This past year has been a time of transition for everyone and artists are invited to show transitions as seen through their eyes.

The exhibit is open to NHAA members and area artists, and works chosen will be on display at the Levy Gallery from Thursday, Aug. 5 through Sunday, Aug. 29. One to three pieces can be submitted. All work will be juried in digital format and artists will be notified of jury results by email.

This year’s juror is Jason Landry, a fine art photography collector. He is the former owner of Panopticon Gallery in Boston and was the founding director of the MFA in Photography program at the New Hampshire Institute of Art in Manchester.

Landry has spent time working in various capacities at the Photographic Resource Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and was a member of the Board of Directors for the Griffin Museum of Photography and the Seacoast Arts and Cultural Alliance/WSCA Radio in Portsmouth.

First, second and third place prizes, as well as honorable mentions will be awarded during an opening reception on Friday, Aug. 6 at the Levy Gallery, pending the most up-to-date Covid-19 information.

There will also be a Lotte Jacobi Award presented by fine art photographer Gary Samson, New Hampshire’s seventh Artist Laureate and Professor Emeritus of Photography at the New Hampshire Institute of Art.

Jacobi is widely considered to be one of premiere photographers of the 20th century photographing an impressive array of intellectuals, cultural figures and celebrities such as Albert Einstein, Eleanor Roosevelt, Robert Frost, J.D. Salinger and Paul Robeson. Due to her support, photography was accepted at NHAA as a fine art.
