Connecticut Driver Faces DWI Charges After Portsmouth Crash

PORTSMOUTH, NH — A Connecticut man is facing two drunken driving charges after being accused of crashing into a mailbox and parked vehicle on Ocean Road on Friday.

Officers were sent to Ocean Road near Banfield Road for a crash report around 12:15 a.m. When they arrived, they found that a car had left the street, knocked down a mailbox, and drove across a front lawn. The car then struck "a legally parked vehicle in the driveway" of the home, Capt. Michael Maloney of the Portsmouth Police Department said.

The driver was identified as Ashish Rao, 26, of Danbury, CT. He was arrested on driving while intoxicated and aggravated driving while intoxicated charges.

Rao was taken to the Rockingham County Jail and later, released on personal recognizance bail. He is due in Portsmouth Circuit Court on Jan. 11, 2021, for arraignment.
