Funeral Friday for Rye Student Found Dead in Italy

A funeral will be held on Friday for Rye native John Durkin, who died last month in Rome, Italy.

According to WMUR-TV, calling hours for Durkin will be held Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Community Campus in Portsmouth. His funeral will be held on Friday at noon at Saint Theresa Church in Rye.

Durkin died when he was hit by a train two weeks ago. The Bates College student was in Italy as part of the Trinity College Program in Rome.

He was last seen by friends at a bar named Sloppy Sam's in Campo dei Fiori around 1:30 a.m. on Feb. 20. The Italian publication Roma Today reported that camera footage then showed Durkin walking alone near the train tracks, about a mile away from where his body was found.
