NH Institute of Art Program to Explain the Neuroscience of Art in Portsmouth
"Creativity and the Brain" is a multi-media presentation about what happens in the brain during the process of creating and viewing art.

New Hampshire Institute of Art (NHIA) faculty members will present “Creativity and the Brain,” a multi-media presentation about what happens in the brain during the process of creating and viewing art, at The Music Hall Loft located at 131 Congress St. in Portsmouth at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 25. The event also marks the first installment of The Music Hall Loft Art Talks, based off of NHIA’s current popular Manchester-based Art Talks series.
Dr. Foad Afshar, Psychology and Art Education faculty at NHIA and Mike Ariel, NHIA faculty, artist, photographer and filmmaker, will help explain how the brain translates visual and emotional data, specifically when appreciating art.
“When we engage in the arts…we activate networks in our brain and then create new ones. Every time we create a new network, we expand our brain’s capacity. It’s as simple as that,” Afshar said.
