Portsmouth Remembers the Fallen on 9/11

A ceremony was held at City Hall Wednesday morning.

Portsmouth officials gathered at City Hall Wednesday morning to remember the more than 3,000 people who lost their lives in the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

Portsmouth Police Chief Stephen DuBois said the tragedy that claimed the lives of hundreds of New York City Police Officers and firefighters at the World Trade Center and the more recent Boston Marathon bombings are always upsetting.

"It makes me sad that things like that can happen on American soil," DuBois said.

But those events also fill him with pride when he sees how first responders conduct themselves regardless of the danger and risk involved, he added.

DuBois asked those present to "keep warm in their hearts the memories of those who came before us." He also said it is important to remain vigilant.

As Portsmouth Police Chaplain Rev. Ian Ashby led those gathered in prayer, he said it is important to remember the police officers and firefighters who lost their lives when the Twin Towers collapsed after they were struck by two hijacked jetliners.

"We remember all those who sacrificed their lives to try and save others," he said.
