Pro Portsmouth Cancels First Night Event For 2020
New Hampshire's only remaining First Night celebration has been canceled due to increased coronavirus and COVID-19 infection rates.
PORTSMOUTH, NH — New Hampshire's only remaining First Night celebration has been canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Pro Portsmouth, the producers of the event since the late-1970s, announced the cancellation on Thursday. The decision, according to Barbara Massar, the executive director of the organization, was due to "ongoing spikes" in COVID-19 positive test results as well as concern for the safety of the public during the event. The event features outside performances including ice sculptures and fireworks but indoor performances, too, where safety cannot be assured.
"As the lone First Night celebration in New Hampshire, cancelling is especially difficult for us, but it is the responsible thing to do," she said. "We remain hopeful that come spring of next year, we'll be in a better place regarding large gatherings."
