Rockingham County Sheriff Michael Downing Dies at 61
Downing died Friday following a period of failing health.

Rockingham County Sheriff Michael Downing died Friday following a period of failing health. He was 61.
He leaves behind his wife, Heidi, and their five children.
Downing reportedly had been suffering from cancer.

Downing was in the middle of his second term as sheriff. He was first elected in 2010 after serving in the House and Senate. He was a State Police officer for many years and served on Salem’s police department. He was also an Army veteran.
His office said he spent time with family and friends over the last few days, “which brought him great comfort.”

“Sheriff Downing was tireless in his dedication to the citizens of Rockingham County and New Hampshire,” his office said in a statement. “Sheriff Downing was our mentor and leader. His innovations will continue to benefit all the citizens of Rockingham County and New Hampshire.”
Senate President Chuck Morse, R-Salem, released this statement:
“Sheriff Michael Downing has been a dear friend and colleague of mine as well as a truly dedicated, life-long public servant, and devoted family man. Sheriff Downing spent many years serving the citizens in the greater Salem community as well as in the State of New Hampshire in the State Legislature and in numerous other roles. His work has had a tremendously positive impact on our state and his passing is an immense loss for the local community and state.
“My thoughts and prayers remain with Sheriff Downing’s friends and loved ones during this difficult time.”
