We are living in trying times, with the Covid-19 pandemic and no vaccine in the near future. The current occupant in the white house, Donald J. Trump , actually removed two thirds of CDC personnel who were stationed in China to monitor such potential events. This was administered within the past two years. Decisions such as these were obviously made without concern for good public policy strategy when one considers what the consequences have been. In considering this one fateful action, which has been one in a series of not well thought out directives, let us also consider another concern- that Trump has always shown a lack of interest in engaging our close allies who happen to be of a Democratic persuasion including the members of NATO as an example. Instead, he has been more interested in authoritarian regimes hence his love affair with both Kim Jong-un of North Korea and Vladimir Putin of Russia.
In the case of Kim, he is a merciless killer of his own people, putting those who don't fall into line in accordance with his whims, into internment camps. In terms of Putin, he is well known for his state sponsored media, and his disposal of journalists whom he doesn't agree with. Indeed, in terms of Trump, he seems to have similar desires in his hatred for the media, especially those who ask him challenging questions in his White House press conferences. In fact, there seems to be a parallel with Richard Nixon's desire to shut down The Washington Post in his time. In Trumps case, if he could he would abolish CNN.
For the most part, we as the electorate should take note of these characteristics and consider whether this is the type of individual that we want to preside over our precious democracy and invaluable constitution. His lack of insight into public policy, but more importantly his disregard for Democratic values should be a concern to every American.
