Suspicious Device Found on Route 1 Bypass

The device was ultimately determined to be a hoax.

The state police bomb squad was called on Thursday morning after a suspicious device was found on the Route 1 Bypass in Portsmouth.

Portsmouth Police said the device was found near the northbound on/off ramp to Maplewood Avenue around 9 a.m. The ramp was shut down for over an hour while police investigated. Police cleared the scene around 10:30 a.m.

According to New Hampshire State Police Lt. Christopher W. Vetter, the device was found by a New Hampshire Department of Transportation worker who was cleaning storm drains.

Upon arrival, the state police bomb squad deemed the device safe enough to remove from the premises. After further analysis, state police determined the device wasn't a threat and was likely "a hoax device."
