Women Helping Women Campaign

Collects more than 250 purses for Seacoast area women transitioning from homeless shelters, domestic violence shelters, and recovery centers

The Alliance for Greater Good’s latest effort, the Women Helping Women campaign successfully collected over 250 “gently loved” purses and raised over $500 to empower women transitioning from homeless shelters, domestic violence shelters and recovery centers. In addition, countless toiletries and other small necessities were donated.

The success of this campaign demonstrated just how impactful it can be to bring women together to help other women succeed and persevere. The Alliance, an organization co-founded by four women, partnered with Latonya Wallace, founder of Purseverance 207 (https:// www.purseverance207.org), and Mary Omberg, stylist for the women’s clothing shop cabi, to rally the kindness of women living in the Seacoast area to donate the purses, toiletries and money to make a difference in other women’s lives. Purseverance 207 will be filling each of the purses with the personal items, as well as notes of encouragement to uplift and inspire the recipients to keep moving forward. As Latonya shares the story of starting her non-profit, you can see and hear the passion she has for “empowering women one purse at a time” and giving “these women something tangible that is theirs, and theirs alone.”

The Portsmouth Senior Activity Center and Lizology, a local women’s boutique, volunteered to serve as the collection sites for the campaign. The Alliance team stopped by regularly to empty the full bins. Julie Johnson, one of the Alliance co-founders shared, “It was great to work with Brinn Sullivan at the Senior Activity Center again and to partner with Jen Clark from Lizology for the first time. We love it when the community’s kindness and generosity shine brightly.”

On April 29, Latonya Wallace met with Kathryn Garcia, Julie Johnson, Lisa Vivinetto and Joanne Wolfe of the Alliance to receive some of the many purses collected. They chose to meet on the porch at Carey Cottage, home of GoodWork, the local nonprofit incubator where both organizations are part of a group of eight, early-stage nonprofits receiving free strategic and operational support in 2021.
