Driver Trapped After Truck Crash In Salem On I-93

One driver was seriously injured and flown to a Massachusetts hospital for treatment.

SALEM, NH — Two people were injured Wednesday in a collision involving a box truck and a landscaping truck towing a wood chipper on Interstate 93. The accident occurred just north of Exit 1 in Salem. One of the drivers was flown by helicopter to a Massachusetts hospital after being extricated. The road was closed to traffic for about two hours.

State Police say the accident occurred around 1:30 p.m. The driver of the truck, a 42-year-old man from Lowell, Massachusetts, tried to get into the breakdown lane but was rear-ended by a 45-year-old man from Central Falls, Rhode Island, driving a Hino box truck. The driver of the Hino truck was seriously injured trapped in the cabin until members of the Salem Fire Department were able to extricate him. He was then medflighted to Massachusetts General Hospital.

The driver of the landscaping truck was transported to the Holy Family Hospital with injuries that were not considered to be life-threatening.

State Police said three lanes of the interstate were shut down for about two hours while emergency officials worked on scene. All lanes of travel were closed to traffic for an hour to allow for the helicopter to land, according to the State Police.

Also responding to the scene Wednesday were New Hampshire Department of Transportation officials, who assisted with lane closures and traffic control until both vehicles were removed and all lanes were reopen to traffic.
