SALEM, NH — A job fair is coming to Salem, and the town beaches have passed a cleanliness test. Also, don't forget to cheer on for Salem High School's Career Technical Education students going to the national SkillsUSA competition. Here are the top five things to look forward to in Salem this week.

  1. A team of CTE students from Salem High School is heading to Louisville, Kentucky, to compete in SkillsUSA nationals, taking place this Monday through Friday. After winning a qualifying contest earlier this year, the students will compete hands-on in 103 different trade, technical and leadership skills. More than 18,000 students, teachers and business partners are expected to participate in this 55th annual national event. Salem's CTE students and community members have been raising money for the trip throughout the spring.
  2. Need a job or curious about the current employment market? New Hampshire Employment Security is holding a job fair this Thursday, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Salem High School cafeteria. Dozens of employers will be there.
  3. Salem's town beaches were tested for cleanliness this month and are deemed safe for swimming. Officials have analyzed microbiological samples from eight of the town's swimming holes and none of them exceed the legal levels for bacteria E. coli. More testing will be done in early July and August, and Arlington Pond will also be tested this summer for Cyanobacteria, a blue-green algae. Town health officials say no algae blooms were noted at Salem's beaches during this month's sampling. The recent bacteria level test results for each beach are available on the town's website.
  4. A “grudge match” is being planned between the town's Fire and Police departments this Friday, as the two agencies compete for people donating blood in their honor. The blood drive takes place from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Ingram Senior Center multipurpose room, 1 Sally Sweets Way. Come donate blood in honor of the agency you like best. The Red Cross is conducting the blood drive.
  5. It's property tax time. The deadline to pay the bill is coming up on Monday, July 1. Residents must pay by deadline to avoid an 8-percent interest charge. Partial payments accepted. Those who have not received their bills should call the Salem tax collector at 603-890-2109.
