Cyanobacteria Found At Salem's Arlington Pond

Salem health officials said cyanobacteria and algae were found in "several locations" in Arlington Pond.

SALEM, NH — Salem health officials issued a public alert after harmful cyanobacteria and algae were recently found in "several locations" in Arlington Pond. The bacteria can sometimes causes illnesses in humans and animals that come in contact with it. Health officials said the alert was a "general advisory." Beaches on the pond remain open.

"This general advisory is being issued as a precautionary measure to inform residents," Salem health officials said in a statement. "Residents should remain vigilant. If you observe water that is greenish-blue, has floating globs, or is covered by a layer of scum, please (do) not wade or swim in the water!"

Symptoms of a cyanobacteria illness include nausea, vomiting and fever. If you come in contact with contaminated water, wash off with fresh water as quickly as possible, officials said.
