Freezing Rain, Ice Storm Could Hit Salem This Weekend

The third storm of the week is expected to roll in Friday and Saturday, and it could bring "significant" ice to some areas.

More snow and possibly an ice storm could hit Salem on Friday and Saturday.

The National Weather Service has issued an alert, in which it said ice accumulations could be "significant" in some towns. Currently, Salem is expected to receive periods of rain and/or snow, while area towns like Londonderry have a forecast that includes freezing rain.

Here is the NWS' weekend forecast for Salem, as of Thursday afternoon:

  • Friday: A 30 percent chance of rain after noon. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 41. Southeast wind 5 to 10 mph becoming southwest in the afternoon.
  • Friday night: A chance of rain showers before 2am, then a chance of rain and snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 33. Southwest wind around 5 mph becoming calm after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.
  • Saturday: A chance of rain and snow showers before 9am, then rain showers likely. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 41. Calm wind. Chance of precipitation is 60%.
  • Saturday night: Rain. Low around 34. Calm wind becoming northeast around 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%.
  • Sunday: Rain likely. Cloudy, with a high near 43. Chance of precipitation is 70%.
  • Sunday night: A 50 percent chance of rain. Cloudy, with a low around 33.
