Wrong-Way Driver Operating Tractor-Trailer Crashes In Salem

Police: Anibal Castro of Peabody, Massachusetts, was operating under the influence before crashing a truck on Rockingham Park Boulevard.

SALEM, NH — A Massachusetts man was arrested on drunken driving charge Thursday after being accused of driving the wrong way on Rockingham Park Boulevard.

A Salem police sergeant saw a tractor-trailer unit traveling the wrong way on the Rockingham Park Boulevard, eastbound in the westbound lane, at high speed around 10:20 p.m.

Police said the vehicle travelled through the lights and onto Veterans Memorial Parkway. The vehicle continued traveled eastbound, on the wrong side of the road, and continued before crashing through the intersection of Lawrence Road into the guardrail.

The truck took struck a light pole resulting on live wires falling, police said.

The operator of the tractor-trailer was identified as Anibal M. Castro, 39, from Peabody, Massachusetts, was arrested at the scene for driving under the influence.

Castro was processed and released on personal recognizance bail and will have an arraignment before the Salem District Court on Jan. 25, 2021.

The incident remains under investigation and further charges are likely, police said.
