Graphic Designer Turned Artist Displays Mosaics In Basking Ridge
After 30 years as a hobby, Tanya DiBello is turning her passion for mosaic art into a full-time career. She will be at 7-Eleven on Saturday.
BASKING RIDGE, NJ — Basking Ridge local Tanya DiBello has always had a passion for art. She graduated from college in the fine arts program and began her career as a graphic designer. Over the years she created art on a computer but she had always felt drawn to doing things with her hands.
She started mosaic tile art as a hobby 30 years ago. It wasn't until the pandemic hit that DiBello decided to follow her dream full force.
"I was looking for a hands-on outlet to express my creativity, I discovered mosaic tile art, made my first vase and found this art form was my true passion," said DiBello.

On Saturday, DiBello is working with Mark Casale, owner of 7-Eleven at 545 Martinsville Road in Basking Ridge, to showcase her tile work from 1 to 4 p.m. outside the store.
"The joy of tiling for me is working with the glass from cutting and adhering the tiles to a base, then grouting the piece, and cleaning it to look shiny and sparkly. Glass art is inspiring to me and the tiles look like beautiful gems," said DiBello.

She creates a variety of mosaics such as wall décor, peace signs, vases, candleholders, birdhouses, and ornaments.
"I enjoy using different surfaces. I mix into my mosaics, charms, beads, and pieces of jewelry. Also, I like to imbue the artwork with soul and inspirational sayings. I would describe my mosaics as one-of-a-kind, radiant, and joyful," said DiBello.
Her inspiration comes from studying other famous mosaic artists, like, Antonio Gaudi, and Niki de Saint Phalle.
"My experience in graphic design lends me many ideas. I research mosaics from different cultures, such as Italian, Islamic, and Egyptian," said DiBello. "Instinctively, I can look at a plain piece of wood and imagine the picture I’m going to create."
