Car Engulfs In Flames On I-78 In Basking Ridge

An East Brunswick woman was able to escape her vehicle with non-life threatening injuries. The roadway has since been reopened, NJSP said.

BASKING RIDGE, NJ — An East Brunswick woman was injured after her car went off I-78 and caught fire Monday morning, authorities said.

The driver was able to get out of the vehicle. She suffered non-life threatening injuries and was taken by Atlantic Ambulance to a nearby hospital, said New Jersey State Police Sgt. Lawrence Peele.

The crash was reported at 10 a.m. on the westbound side at mile marker 34.4 near exit 33 for Route 525, Liberty Corner Road, Martinsville,

The 46-year-old woman was driving a Toyota Rav4 when it went off the left side of the roadway, overturned and became engulfed in flames, Peele said.

Liberty Corner Fire Company quickly extinguished the fire. Far Hills-Bedminster Fire Department, Warren Township Fire Department, the NJ State Police and Bernards Township Police also helped, Liberty Corner Fire Chief Ron DePasquale said.

There were no other vehicles involved. The crash blocked the left lane until 12:30 p.m. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

The state's notification system 511nj.org initially reported the vehicle was a tractor trailer, it was later confirmed by police it was a Toyota Rav4.
