Free Tree Seedling Giveaway In Basking Ridge On Arbor Day

Arbor Day is April 30, but Bernards Township residents can celebrate May 1 with free seedlings.

BASKING RIDGE, NJ — Basking Ridge is celebrating Arbor Day with a seedling giveaway. Bernards Township residents can pick up free seedlings from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 1 at the pool parking lot of Pleasant Valley Park (3405 Valley Rd., Basking Ridge).

Families can get up to three seedlings at the event. You can find the drive-through giveaway at the first lot on the left, adjacent to the pool.

"Trees contribute to cleaner air and water, they provide beauty, and protect and nourish wildlife, bird and insects," the township's flyer says.

New Jersey celebrates Arbor Day on the last Friday in April, which this year is April 30. The Garden State celebrated its first Arbor Day in 1884.

The nation's first Arbor Day occurred 12 years prior in Nebraska, where more than one million trees were planted. Each state had a law designating Arbor Day by the 1920s.
