BASKING RIDGE, NJ — The spirit of giving can continue when you dispose of your Christmas trees, thanks to two local initiatives. Recycling that Christmas tree can aid the Ridge girls basketball team and Somerset County Park Commission.

The Ridge girls basketball team is running its annual Christmas Tree Pickup fundraiser. Just email RidgeGirlsBasketball@gmail.com with your name, address and preferred pickup date — Jan. 3 or 10.

Then leave the tree at the curb by 9 a.m. on pickup day with a $15 donation in the mailbox. Mark the envelope "RGB."

All trees picked up during the fundraiser will get recycled into mulch, which will help maintain trails in Bernards Township parks.

The Somerset County Park Commission will also collect natural Christmas trees to chip into mulch for plantings throughout the park system. County residents can bring their trees to Colonial Park Gardens, Parking Lot F, 156 Mettlers Rd. in Somerset, Franklin Township or to the lighted baseball field at 355 Milltown Rd., Bridgewater.

Both facilities will accept donations from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. every day through the end of January.

Each family can only bring one tree, which must be free of all ornaments, wires, netting and tinsel. Wreaths and garlands won't be accepted since they can't get recycled. Click here for more info.
